Nite : The Weighbridge

If the sun fails to shine... take niteshots instead... :)

A new crossing near the newly tarted up Weighbridge area...

- the new railings give us a handy place to plonk a camera for a long exposure shot.

The new stone benches are colourfully lit from below...

.. more.

Towards the RY Hotel...

.. closer...

.. and closer.

The Museum Arch gets in on the blue light act too.

Eastern side of Caledonia Place...

.. closer.

West-ish....

.. towards the Pomme d'Or and Liberation Square.

I drove by the square, last night. I must say I believe they've got it right for a change.
A pleasant open space day, or night. I just hope someone doesn't feel the need to fill the space with a 'world-class' gallery based on a 'robust' plan derived from 'joined-up thinking'

Hi Jeremy, thanks for commenting.

Yes it's not an unpleasant space, is it? I agree we really don't need to close in the space by plonking a great big (expensive and questionably needed) art gallery there. Keep it open, I say.

I'm sorry folks, I have to disagree.

As a public space I consider the area incredibly bland, very much a classic case of style over substance. Althought it has an "arty" vibe at night, with the lights and whatnot, the area has an inherent coldness about it, purely because it's nothing more than a flat stone and metal space.

And as for the street furniture, it's less comfortable than the basics provided in Mcdonalds - who incidentally, have purposely designed their furniture to discourage customers from settling down, relaxing and hanging around.

It would have better served islanders had the opportunity been taken at the Weighbridge to create a modernised and extended version of the park that graced the area during the Victorian era.

As regards that current 'open' and spacious style of the Weighbridge, won't that be incredibly convenient should they decide to build a National Gallery? Not only will it require a miniscule amount of physcial effort to prepare the land for the new construction, there'll be no pretty parkland or suchlike for islanders to get defensive about....

Hi Jtas, you're very persuasive as usual. I agree it does seem bland and cold (or baking desert when the sun's out) and I would have prefered the road being kept and the restoration of the circular garden with QV back in her rightful place.
I'm just grateful it hasn't been built on yet - as your final point is spot on.
But hasn't McD's now got more comfy downstairs in the last year or so?
Costa's sofas seem to buck that calculated trend too :)
